Headaches and Migraines

Headache and Migraine Treatment with our Harrisburg Chiropractor

Woman waking up with a headache in Harrisburg

Headaches are definitely not a fun experience and migraines are a completely different level of misery. Living with headaches or migraines can make it difficult to function in daily life. Although medication is often used as a short-term treatment, drugs are never enough to completely alleviate the symptoms. In many situations, the cause of your headaches and migraines is structural, so with proper chiropractic treatment in Harrisburg PA, it is possible to completely overcome this debilitating problem.

What is a Headache?

There are quite a few things that distinguish a headache from a migraine, including:

Headaches-if you have a headache, there is generally pain and pressure at the back of your neck, on your forehead, both sides of the head and/or at the temples. Headache pain can be from mild to severe and it can last from 30 minutes to a week or longer. Tension headaches are the most common type, which is often caused by anxiety, stress or muscle strain. Other types of headaches include:

  • Sinus headaches
  • Cluster headaches
  • Rebound headaches

What is a Migraine?

Migraines-if you have a migraine, unlike a headache where the pain is on both sides of your head, the pain is located on only one side of your head. The pain from a migraine generally starts as a tightening, dull throb and then gradually intensifies into severe and concentrated pain. A migraine is typically caused by the blood vessels in your head becoming constricted and dilated. The symptoms of a migraine often include:

  • Pain behind one ear or one eye
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Blurry vision
  • Sharp pain in your temples
  • Seeing flashing lights or white spots
  • Sensitivity to sound and light

Is Chiropractor Care Beneficial for Migraines and Headaches?

The short answer is absolutely! When you visit a chiropractor for treatment of headaches or migraines, the first thing the doctor will do is gather your medical history, which helps to determine when, why and how your pain started. This information is critical in helping your chiropractor determine the best course of treatment for relieving your pain. For example, if you first noticed the migraines after being involved in an automobile accident, your migraines may be the result of unresolved issues with your spine that occurred from injury during the crash.

Since the majority of headaches are caused by stress, it is important for you to take the necessary steps to reduce your stress triggers, which can ultimately alleviate your headaches. There are a number of ways to reduce stress, such as massage therapy and relaxation exercises. Your chiropractor may also recommend treatments, such as alignments which can alleviate any undue pressure on your neck, spine and back that may be causing migraines or headaches.
