Sciatica Treatment

Sciatica Treatment with our Harrisburg Chiropractor

Harrisburg Chiropractor treating patient who has sciatica

Sciatica pain can range from being a nuisance to causing severe pain that makes sitting, standing and moving around nearly impossible to do. This back problem occurs when your sciatic nerve becomes inflamed. At Skocik Chiropractic in Harrisburg PA, we offer chiropractic care to relieve the symptoms of sciatica.

Causes of Sciatica

Your sciatic nerve is a long nerve that runs from the lower part of your back and down your leg. When there is too much pressure on this nerve, it can become inflamed or pinched, leading to discomfort. Possible causes of sciatica include spinal disc problems, such as a herniated disc, or bone spurs that develop on your vertebrae. You might also have sciatica due to nerve damage caused by diabetes, although this is rarer.

Your risk of having sciatica increases if you have one or more risk factors. These include having a herniated disc, bone spurs or a medical condition that can cause nerve damage. Other risk factors include having a job where you have to turn and twist your back often or carry heavy items, being obese or having a tendency to sit for long periods of time.

Symptoms of Sciatica

When you have sciatica, it typically causes mild to severe pain that affects one side of your lower back. This pain sometimes spreads down the flank and leg on the same side, since the sciatic nerve runs through this part of your body. Sciatica pain might only be mild soreness, but it can also cause much more severe pain, especially when you move your back suddenly. You might also have tingling in your leg and foot.

Treatment for Sciatica from Our Chiropractor in Harrisburg

Conventional treatments to relieve sciatica symptoms usually include over-the-counter medications and home care, such as applying a heating pad and doing stretches. These types of treatments might provide temporary relief from sciatica pain, but it typically returns. For more long-term relief, chiropractic care can help. Our chiropractor in Harrisburg offers spinal adjustments to help reduce sciatica.

Chiropractic adjustments involve realigning the spine, which corrects any misalignments that are present. These misalignments can end up putting pressure on the sciatic nerve. Bringing ther spine into the correct alignment takes pressure off of this nerve, leading to relief from pain, tingling and other symptoms. Our chiropractor might recommend massage therapy and other forms of treatment as well, which help reduce muscle tension and lower your risk of having sciatica occur again.
